What are some things that may improve a septic system's function?

I think ours is working ok, but how would I even know that? What are known "improvements?

We need a lot more information, but if you have an existing system and you ground percs well, there may be nothing much to do. Perhaps check the solids level in the tank once in awhile. a quick AI query yielded:

A septic tank should be pumped when:

  • Scum + sludge = 30% of total tank volume, or

  • Sludge alone reaches ~12 inches, or

  • Scum layer is within ~3 inches of the outlet tee/baffle

Those are the industry and regulatory standards.

We were going to put in an aerator, but when we checked our disbursement pits, only the first has been caring for the wastewater, the second and its two leech lines were dry, so we seem t be percing very well.
