Building Anything Rural: From Concept to Community Hub

I never thought of homestead news as documenting milestones of the site or its members, or creating anything like homestead news or a community updates page, but RuralAnything is “mostly” online now. There is not a lot of news or updates. We are not programmers or computer experts and we have had to use AI to help us get through issues, just like you use the tools you have to make things work. It is not just a “get ‘er done” mentality, it is do what it takes to complete a task, do it safely. We are still learning, with a lot of legal stuff, disclaimers, etc.

The journey of Anything Rural began as a focused response to a fragmented online landscape. Rather than forcing visitors to hop across dozens of disparate, cluttered forums and corporate databases just to find practical answers to country living or country homesteads, you set out to build a clean, unified digital home for rural property owners, homesteaders, and DIYers. Guided by experience and a commitment to handling one meaningful topic at a time, the site evolved from a simple root landing page into a structured, multi-layered resource.

Over the past few months of development, the infrastructure behind the scenes grew significantly more robust. To achieve total a degree of control and optimize performance without relying on bloated premium software, pestered AI and somewhat customized the web foundation. This included AI generated 300 lines of custom CSS for better visual styling, alongside deploying lightweight PHP code snippets via WPCode to extend core functionalities—such as unlocking multi-keyword targeting in Rank Math and optimizing URL routes.

The core architecture was split between the main site, anythingrural.com, and the forum, anythingrural.com/forum/:

• The Root Site: Anchored by structured pillar pages covering rural property choices, land development, home purchasing, legal disclosures, and a newly minted News & Announcements hub.
• The Community Forum: Powered by wpForo and integrated with private messaging tools, the forum seems established with specialized boards ranging from off-grid solar and well water maintenance to agriculture and equipment management.

Along the way, we randomly tackled technical hurdles— trying to smooth out directory-level sitemap configurations in Google Search Console, establishing 301 redirection maps to preserve search authority, and fortifying site security. Today, with a couple of active discussions taking place (hoping to expand), structured legal and informational frameworks in place, and an “ok” technical stack under the hood, Anything Rural is online as an authentic, community-driven resource for those living and building outside the suburbs, or wanting to.

Sunday Aug 9, 2026: Homestead News

We do not plan on adding something every day, but today we helped a neighbor. I think, in the rurals, there is actually more of a tendency to do this. Like, a generator is leaking oil, a new cell phone is hard to set up for an older friend, a battery has failed on a solar gate operator. Most of time, people just hire a “professional” to do things, sometimes their rates double due to distance (completely understood).

A lot of these things you may watch on you-tube, but in here you can ask questions and get answers that might not be found in a video. Our friend today, just a few hours later slipped and fell, she called her son and they are enroute to the hospital. We pray all is ok. Sometimes age does not blend well with what goes on out here, but we press on!
